Stages of Sleep
Sleep is more than simply resting. It is a carefully regulated biological process that allows the body and brain to recover, repair, and prepare for the day ahead. Throughout the night, you move through different stages of sleep, each supporting important physical and mental functions.
Different Stages of Sleep:
Sleep is divided into two main categories: Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. NREM sleep consists of three stages—N1, N2, and N3—before the body enters REM sleep. A complete sleep cycle typically lasts between 90 and 120 minutes and repeats several times during the night.
Transition to Sleep: Stage N1
N1 is the lightest stage of sleep and marks the transition from wakefulness to sleep. During this stage, your body begins to relax, brain activity slows, and you become less aware of your surroundings. Because sleep is still light, you can be awakened easily.
Light Sleep: Stage N2
N2 is the stage where you spend most of your sleeping hours. The breathing and heart rate slow, body temperature drops, and your body prepares for deeper sleep. This stage also supports memory, learning, and overall mental performance.
Deep Sleep: Stage N3
N3, also known as deep or slow-wave sleep, is the most restorative stage of sleep. During this stage, the body repairs tissues, strengthens the immune system, restores energy, and supports healthy growth and recovery. Waking up from deep sleep can leave you feeling groggy for a few minutes.
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep
REM sleep usually begins about 90 minutes after you fall asleep. It is the stage where most dreaming occurs and brain activity becomes highly active. REM sleep plays an important role in emotional regulation, learning, memory consolidation, and overall cognitive function. Most individuals experience four to six REM periods each night. The first REM period may last only a few minutes, while later periods become progressively longer.
