A poor night's sleep can affect much more than just how you feel the next morning. Chronic sleep deprivation can increase the risk of serious physical and emotional health problems.

Sleep scientists and healthcare professionals continue to promote awareness about healthy sleep practices. However, outdated beliefs and common sleep myths continue to create misconceptions about sleep. Here are some of the most common sleep myths that need to be addressed:

Adults require five or fewer hours of sleep to maintain good health:

This is one of the most common sleep misconceptions affecting adults. Regular sleep deprivation can lead to diverse and long-term health effects. Lack of sleep can increase the risk of developing heart problems, hypertension, heart attacks, depression, and diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get at least 7 hours of sleep per night for optimal health.

Day time drowsiness is usually due to lack of sleep:

Daytime drowsiness is often associated with insufficient sleep; however, this is not always the case. Feeling sleepy during the day despite getting adequate sleep may indicate an underlying medical condition or sleep disorder, such as narcolepsy. Excessive daytime sleepiness can affect daily performance and increase the risk of safety concerns, including drowsy driving.

Sleep only affects brain activity:

Sleep is often associated with brain function because it plays an important role in memory, learning, and emotional regulation. However, sleep does not only affect the brain; it also supports the health and functioning of the entire body. Snoring is normal:

The Brain rests while asleep:

Sleep consists of two main categories:
Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. NREM sleep includes three stages (N1, N2, and N3) and is associated with physical restoration. REM sleep is characterized by increased brain activity and plays an important role in learning, memory, and dreaming.

During REM sleep, most voluntary muscles become temporarily inactive, which prevents the body from acting out dreams. This stage is also associated with rapid eye movements and vivid dreaming.
